PICTURE DISCUSSION - FIVE BASIC THINGS TO COVER

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO :

  • give the IDENTITY of the person/people you see in the picture
  • explain the ACTIVITY the people are involved in
  • suggest the PURPOSE and explain why
  • use your COMMON SENSE to support the WHOLE QUESTION and the EXAMINATION
  • keep your attitude POSITIVE and say only positive things.

REMEMBER -  Use the FIVE in any order you need, but always identify the people and explain the activity first.  If there is something VERY STRIKING in the photograph, identify it FIRST.

PAPER 3: THE THREE QUESTIONS

Although I have repeatedly mentioned in class that in the PICTURE DISCUSSION component, the THREE questions asked are going to be MAINLY the following three,

  • Why do you think these people are gathered here?
  • What do you think any one of the particular characters is thinking / doing / feeling at the moment?
  • What do you think is going to happen next? / What do you think has happened before this scene?
SHSS STAFF RETREAT 2 JUNE 2010 at Bollywood Veggies

the element of UNCERTAINTY still remains.  So, it is better to be prepared for any changes in the way the above questions are farmed out to you during the EXAMINATIONS.

BRING YOUR EARS AND PATIENCE along with you:  ALWAYS LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION BEFORE YOU SPEAK UP.

PAPER 3: THE THIRD QUESTION in Picture Discussion

Source:  The Sunday Times 27 June 2010

The THIRD question is usually a PREDICTION question:  The BEFORE or the NEXT Question.

The THIRD question may be asked in any of the following ways:
  • How do you think the activity will affect these people?
  • What do you think has happened five minutes before this picture is taken?
  • What do you think is going to happen one hour after this scene?
  • What do you think is going to happen next?
  • How do you think the man is going to respond?
  • Where do you think the people will go after this?
  • What happens if it should rain?
  • What happens if the weather becomes better?

REMEMBER:  Your answer to the FIRST / SECOND and THIRD questions should be a continuum - they should be linked in the sense that the MAIN TOPIC you have chosen to speak about, should be kept in focus in your discussion.  PREDICTION in the THIRD question requires IMAGINATION - whether you are talking about BEFORE or AFTER; THEN or NEXT.

PAPER 3: THE SECOND QUESTION in Picture Discussion

Source:  The Sunday Times 27 June 2010

The SECOND question:  The ZOOM-IN / CLOSE-UP  question:

The purpose of this question is to examine your ability to REPORT closely on any particular or specific aspect of the picture.  So expect to be asked about
  • Doing
  • Thinking
  • Feeling
  • Happening
TO or OF any one or more of the people in the photograph.

There is no RIGHT or WRONG answer.  There is only such a thing as a REASONABLE explanation.  You need to support your reasonable explanation with EVIDENCE from the photograph or IMAGINATION from your mind.  Your IMAGINATION should be realistic and believable.

The SECOND question may be asked in any of the following ways:

  • Who do you think is the busiest / funniest / happiest person in the picture?
  • What do you think might have happened here in this picture?
  • What do you think the person on the extreme left of the picture might be thinking at the moment?
  • What do you think the person on the right hand side of the picture might be feeling at the moment?
  • What do you think the woman in the centre of the picture is going to do?
  • What do you think will happen to the people in the foreground?
REMEMBER:
DO NOT STRAY AWAY FROM THE ANSWER YOU HAVE PROVIDED IN THE FIRST QUESTION.  IN OTHER WORDS, YOUR ANSWER TO THE SECOND QUESTION SHOULD BE CLOSELY LINKED TO THE ANSWER TO THE FIRST QUESTION.

USE YOUR IMAGINATION FOR THE SECOND QUESTION.  IF YOU DON'T, YOU WILL HAVE LITTLE TO SAY AND NOTHING TO ELABORATE ON WHAT LITTLE YOU ARE GOING TO SAY.

PAPER 3: THE FIRST QUESTION in Picture Discussion

Source:  The Sunday Times 27 June 2010

The following THREE prompts for Picture Description are applicable to both N and O Level Candidates
for 1189 and 1127 Englsih Language Paper 3 Oral Examinations.

The FIRST question: THE ACTIVITY QUESTION
The purpose of the first question is to ask you to speak in FLUENT and ACCURATE English, about an overall impression of what you see in the photograph.  You should be able to talk broadly about the ACTIVITY that the PEOPLE are DOING.  Do not stray into description of particular objects or people.  If you must do so, then do so quickly and then return to the main ACTIVITY.

Always think of what you SEE in the picture first.  Once you have EXHAUSTED that, use your IMAGINATION to think about things related to what you see which CANNOT be found in the picture.  IMAGINATION broadens your discussion and makes the examiner aware that you are ABLE TO CARRY A MATURE DISCUSSION.

REMEMBER:  THIS IS A LANGUAGE EXAMINATION COMPONENT, NOT A TEST OF YOUR INTEGRITY (HONESTY).  So when you imagine something about the picture, you are not lying about it even if you have never experienced some of those things you are going to share with the examiner.

REMEMBER:  IT MAY BE TERMED A "DISCUSSION" BUT YOU ARE THE CANDIDATE AND SO, YOU ARE EXPECTED TO SPEAK A LOT MORE AND TAKE THE INITIATIVE TO "DISCUSS" THE PICTURE.

REMEMBER:  EYE CONTACT and CLARITY OF YOUR SPEECH are important things.  The examiner needs to see you eye-to-eye when you speak.  He is not looking for the RIGHT answer but for your REASONABLE EXPLANATION.

THE FIRST QUESTION MAY BE ASKED IN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING WAYS:

  • What is the aim of this group of people?
  • Explain the purpose of the people here?
  • What is the event that is happening here?
  • Why do you think these people are gathered here?
  • What do you think is happening here?
  • Why do you think this event is being held here?

PICTURE DISCUSSION 1 - 24 June 2010 (Thursday) O Level Oral Examinations - Internal Examinations - Morning Session

Picture Discussion photo - 24 June 2010 (Thursday)

Questions by the Examiners
[1]  Why do you think these people are gathered here?

This looks like a blood-donation drive.
Immediately in this picture, I see two men having their blood pressure taken.
Afterwards I think they will donate their blood.
The other people in the background are waiting for their turn to have the nurses attend to them.
The place looks like a makeshift medical centre.
The facilities used by the medical personnel are simple but adequate for the purpose.
These blood donors are gathered here for a good cause.
Their contribution is important.
I am sure their blood will be properly stored in a blood bank.
Whenever there is a need, their contribution will come in useful for needy patients.

Judging from the facial expressions of the men in the foreground, they seem most willing and generous to donate their blood.
The rest of the people are also waiting patiently.
Hopefully, they are all able to donate blood to the blood bank.
They should know that they are doing a very meaningful thing.

[2]  Who do you think is the busiest person in the picture, and why?

I think the busiest person is the nurse attending to the blood pressure taking in the foreground.
Of course, her other colleagues in the background, the two attendance taking assistants are also busy, but the nurse should be the busiest.
She is the busiest because she needs to attend to every one of the donors personally.
Before she straps the blood pressure armband around a person, she will need to check to see if the donor's medical record is in order.
Then she has to see if the donor is medically fit.
Then she has to ask if the donor has any previous experience in blood donation.
She cannot afford to make any mistakes in this checking.
She also need to record the blood pressure correctly.
After that, she needs to make sure she finds the correct blood vessel to collect blood from the donor.
She needs to pay a lot of personal attention.
She needs to put the collected blood away safely by making sure it is kept in a proper storage.
Then she has to go attend to the next person.
She may only rest after she is done with the last donor, unless extra helpers come along so that she can take a break.
These are the reasons why I say she has to be the busiest person here.

[3]  How do you think the man having his blood pressure taken is feeling?

Judging from his facial expressions, the man seems calm and collected.
He should be feeling quite happy with what he is doing.
He is doing a good deed.
He is having his blood pressure checked and he should feel confident that he is healthy enough to contribute.
He is also mentally getting himself prepared to have his blood drawn from his blood vessel.
Some people are panicky and get all nervous when they think about having a needle poke into their body and having their blood drawn afterwards.
But not this man.
Like I've said earlier, he looks very calm and well-prepared.
That's why I think he must be feeling good and confident.
He is doing a good deed.

PICTURE DISCUSSION 2 - 24 June 2010 (Thursday) O Level Oral Examinations - Internal Examinations - Afternoon Session

The Picture Discussion Photograph on 25 June 2010.

Questions by the Examiners
[1]  What is the aim of this group of people?

This is a desperate situation.
The area shown here is flooded.  I see people rescuing things - plants and flowers.
They are properly working for the orchard.
They are florists.
As they are standing in the river of water, they look very serious.
Fortunately, they are well-prepared.
I can tell because most of them wear plastic boots.
The severe flooding is forcing them to carry out an emergency team work to carry their pots of plants from the low lying areas to higher and drier locations.
The more they rescue, the less loss they incur.
The flooding is severe even though the level is only perhaps ankle-deep.
Having said that, I must say that it is so severe that the whole street has become a river of fast flowing water and the roadside rubbish bin is overturned and probably some cars on the same road may also have stalled.
I can see the anxious looks of these florists because time is not on their side.
Judging from their facial expressions, I can safely say that they want to rescue as many pots of plants and flowers as possible.
The only man in the photograph looks like the leader of the team.
If he is desperate, he doesn't show it.
But he certainly looks purposeful.
The others are full of anguish.
I am certain they are working very hard on this rescue mission.

The river of flooding water must have swept a lot of other things along with the current.
The heavy downpour may have stopped but nothing is certain.
I am sure they should  be able to complete their task as soon as they can.

[2] What do you think might have happened a few hours before this scene?

A few hours ago, I believe the weather must have been so bad that it had to be pouring heavily.
The florists might not have been concerned with the rain at first.
They could have been doing their own respective work in the orchard.
However, the rain must have become heavy.
It was so heavy that flooding occurred as shown in this picture.
Not only was it heavy, it must have continued to rain for a long time.
The fact that the florists are rescuing their things also means that they didn't expect the rain to cause the flooding.
Probably at first there was no cause for alarm but as the water level began to rise, they must have started to panic.
Apart from the rain, I also think that maybe the drainage in the area shown in this paragraph might have been choked with leaves or other rubblsh.
Rain water was drained away too slowly and so the flooding soon became serious.
Before we know it, the stretch of road in the picture became a river of fast flowing water.
The florists then became alarmed and started their rescue operation here.
This I believe is what might have happened a few hours before this photograph was taken.

[3] How do you think the activity will affect these people?
When it floods heavily and suddenly, the daily routines of the florists are being disrupted.
I am sure they are much better off making money on a normal day because they sell plants and flowers for a living.
But in an abnormal situation of this nature, they find themselves having to rescue their pots of plants and flowers, as I have mentioned just now.
But then again, because of the flooding, they band together as a team.
From their facial expressions, I can see how serious they are in wanting to save as many things as they can from being drained away by the fast-flowing water.
When they work so closely together, they get to know one another better.
I am sure they must be feeling this closeness as they are working as a team to deliver their pots of plants from the flooded areas to the higher and drier locations in their orchard.
So this activity may have disrupted their daily routines but it has certainly helped them to get to know each other better.
Yes, they certainly will suffer losses in terms of resources but they will gain very much in terms of friendship and support for one another.

Kawa no nagare no yooni - Life is like the flow of a River

"川の流れのように (Kawa no Nagare no Youni)", meaning "Like the Flow of a River", originally sung by 美空ひばり (Misora Hibari).

This song was composed by 見岳章 (Mitake Akira), and the lyrics were written by 秋元康 (Akimoto Yasushi).

知らず知らず 歩いてきた
Shirazu shirazu aruite kita

細く長い この道
Hosoku nagai kono michi

振り返れば 遥か遠く
Furi kaereba haruka tooku

故郷が 見える

Dekoboko michi ya magari kunetta michi

地図さえない それも また人生
Chizu sae nai sore mo mata jinsei

ああ 川の流れのように とめどなく
Aa kawa no nagare no you ni tomedonaku

空が 黄昏に 染まるだけ
Sora ga tasogare ni somaru dake

生きることは 旅すること

愛する人 そばに連れて
Ai suru hito soba ni tsurete

Partial English Translation

Unknowingly, I have walked here

This long and narrow road.

Looking back, far away

I can see my hometown

On the uneven and winding road

There is no map to follow.

And so life goes on.

Like a river flowing leisurely,

Time passes through the ages

Like a river flowing endlessly,

The sky is reddened by the setting sun....
